<![CDATA[2012 Update]]> Happy New Year and welcome to 2012!

The Calendar has been updated with a number of triathlon and running events for the remainder of the season to help you plan for the next few months. While some events are 'full' (Mooloolaba, Bryon Bay), there are many other events you can still get into.

If you are considering in competing at the 2012 World Championships in your Age Group (aged as at 31-Dec-2012), there is still time to earn selection points.
Australia can send up to 20 per age group (Male and Female), and not everyone in the top 20 will want to go so the positions 'roll down' to those who are able to attend. Don't count yourself out unless you try!

See * Note
* Note: The Auckland Age Group races are currently scheduled for Monday, October 22

The Spain and France teams are unlikely to be full so the selection process will be a formality.

The Auckland Olympic Distance (and to a lesser extent Sprint Distance) will be full in a number of Age Group categories so in order to represent Australia you will need plan your selection races accordingly.

The upcoming selection races for the Olympic and Sprint Distance events are shown below.

Please visit the Triathlon Australia website for details on the selection policy and processes and any updates:

<![CDATA[Clarification of Race Rules]]> Following the Triathlon Queensland Technical Committee (TQTC) meeting on Monday 14.11.11 the committee wished to refresh and clarify a few items which have been causing some debate and confusion, and supplied the information below to Technical Officials.

We wish to share this with everyone as it may prevent you from being caught out by turning up with an illegal bike or speedsuit.
(The posting of the information below has been approved by TQ)

U14 competitor and Aero Bars
As per the Triathlon Australia Policy Document – “Competitors under 14 years of age as at age determination date, as per the Under 19 Race Distances Tables defined in Table 1 and Table 2 below, are not permitted to compete in Triathlon and Duathlon events on a bicycle fitted with aero bars.” Reference: TA Policy Document pg 8 - www.triathlon.org.au/Assets/Triathlon+Australia+Digital+Assets/Resources/Technical/TA+Policy+Document_June+2011.pdf

Speedsuits
This is defined in the Triathlon Australia Race Competition Rules as “A speedsuit must be comprised of 100% textile material such as nylon or lycra and must not include rubberised material such as polyurethane or neoprene. The speedsuit may contain a zipper.” Reference: TA Race Competition Rules - www.triathlon.org.au/Assets/Triathlon+Australia+Digital+Assets/Resources/Technical/TA+Race+Competition+Rules.pdf

There has been confusion as to the policing of this and determining whether or not a suit contains rubberised material. It has been decided by the National Technical Committee that a technical official must consult the speedsuit label if it does not list any rubberised material (most specifically Polyurethane which can be seen as Pu-Cr on the label and Neoprene – which may be seen as Np or NP) then it is presumed that it is not in sufficient quantity to be legally required to be on the label and is therefore considered a legal speedsuit.

If the label has been removed the official is to presume it is because it made reference to the existence of rubberised material and is therefore deemed illegal. The only recourse is for the competitor to provide evidence that this is not the case i.e. find an identical suit with the label still attached to disprove the officials presumption.

Display of Race numbers
Cycle Course – 3.6 A competitor must clearly display the race identification number(s) at all times on the bicycle course if provided by the Race Director. Those not complying may incur a Stop/Start penalty. However if the Technical Official considers that the identification number has been unintentionally lost, then the competitor will not be penalised.
Run Course - 4.3 A competitor must clearly display the race identification number on their front at all times on the run course if provided by the Race Director. Those not complying may incur a Stop/Start penalty. However if the Technical Official considers that the identification number has been unintentionally lost, then the competitor will not be penalised.

Therefore the technical official must ascertain what identification number(s) are being provided by the Race Director to ensure that they do not incorrectly penalise any competitor. This does not put any obligation on Race Directors to provide race numbers but for officials to ensure competitors use all numbers provided correctly.

<![CDATA[Calendar Updates]]> Firstly, good luck to those fortunate enough to receive an entry into Noosa.

I've updated the Calendar to include TQ State Series, which includes an Olympic Tri and a Sprint Distance event which will be used as an Age Group selection race for the World Championships in Auckland. In addition to Auckland there are some European events that may be of interest (visit the Triathlon Australia web-site for selection process).

If you want to treat yourself (family and friends) to a triathlon in paradise, I recommend the Rarotonga Triathlon Festival in the Cook Islands.

Tri-Fit has had members attending the event for the past 10 years, and QLD'ers have made up the majority of the Aussies at the event. Registration has just opened up for the event (12-May-12). If you would like further details on the event I would be happy to answer queries. Visit www.rarotri.info for details.

<![CDATA[TA Race Rule Changes]]> There have been some amendments to triathlon race rules for this season. Competitors should read the entire race rules book if they have not done so in recent years.

Below are the highlights of the new rules which became in effect from 1-Jul-2011.
Please visit the Triathlon Australia website for downloads of the full rules, policies, and summary of changes:
www.triathlon.org.au/Resources/Technical.htm

Summary of the Major Amendments to the Race Competition Rules
The purpose of the Triathlon Australia Race Competition Rules is to provide an atmosphere of fair competition and a safe environment in which to participate. Triathlon Australia (TA) is a member federation of the International Triathlon Union (ITU) and these rules are based on the ITU Competition Rules.

The TA Board has endorsed a number of amendments, which are effective from 1 July, 2011. The information below is a summary of the major amendments. All stakeholders are strongly urged to review the new Race Competition Rules in their entirety to ensure a complete knowledge of all of the changes.

1) Speed Suits (Rule 1.2)
A competitor may wear a speed suit at any time during an event. Please note the Triathlon Australia definition of a speed suit, detailed here:
A speedsuit must be comprised of 100% textile material such as nylon or lycra and must not include rubberised material such as polyurethane or neoprene. The speedsuit may contain a zipper.

2) Footwear for the cycle (Rule 3.1)
Competitors must cycle with appropriate footwear. This was not detailed in previous versions.

3) Bicycle Course Time Penalty and Draft Zone Changes (Rules 3.9 and 7.5)
For all events with a nominal bicycle distance up to and including 40 km, the yellow card time penalty is now 3 minutes, with a draft zone of 7 meters x 3m. Overtaking competitors have 15 seconds to pass through this zone.
For all events with a nominal bicycle distance greater than 40 km, the yellow card time penalty is now 5 minutes, with a draft zone of 12 meters x 3m. Overtaking competitors have 25 seconds to pass through this zone.

4) Competitor Behaviour after Being Passed on the Bicycle Course (Rule3.11e)
Once passed, a competitor must immediately commence to drop back out of the draft zone of the forward competitor before attempting to re-pass.

5) Race Numbers (Rules 3.6 and 4.3)
Competitors are required to clearly display their race numbers whilst on the bicycle course and run course. Note that the event’s context and environment will be taken into account by the Technical Official when considering whether to issue a stop/start penalty.

6) Infringements Table (Appendix B)
To assist competitors with understanding the ramifications of breaking the rules a table has been included detailing examples of red and yellow card infringements.
